Japanese Miyazaki Mangoes – The love of Indians for mangoes is a well-known fact. From Bainganpally to Dussehri, Alphonso to Langra – there are so many varieties of the delicious fruit found in every region of the country. The ‘king of fruits’ also finds its way to many Indian dishes – be it drinks, desserts or even main courses. But do you know that the world’s most expensive mango variety is actually from Japan. Miyazaki Mango is one of the most famous fruits grown in the city of Miyazaki, Japan.
What is Miyazaki Mango: World’s Most Expensive Mango Variety
The highest quality Miyazaki mangoes are branded and sold as ‘Taio-no-Tomago’ or ‘Eggs of Sunshine’. Instead of green or yellow, the skin of a Miyazaki mango is a fiery red and is actually the size of a giant dinosaur egg. There are some specifications for each mango such as its weight, sugar content, color and size. According to reports, the Miyazaki mango must weigh at least 350 grams and have a sugar content of 15% or more.
Miyazaki mango cultivation requires long periods of bright sunlight, warm weather and plenty of rainfall. There is also a protective net around each mango so that sunlight hits it evenly and gives it a unique shape. Mango cultivation is said to have started in the year 1984 in the city of Miyazaki.
The juicy mango variety is available only from April to August. Most mangoes are sold between May and June. In addition to being used for gift giving, the seasonal delight is incorporated into many local dishes such as parfaits, puddings, curries or even pasta!

Miyazaki mango is said to be a premium fruit and one of the most expensive fruits sold in Japan. The price reportedly starts from Rs. 8,600/- and can go up to Rs. 2.7 lakh for a box of two mangoes.
Where To Find Miyazaki Mango?
Apart from Japan, Miyazaki mangoes are also cultivated in some other countries with ideal weather conditions. This includes Thailand, the Philippines and India. Recently, an HT report revealed that a gardener couple are growing Miyazaki mango variety in their farm in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He had to employ four guards and seven dogs to protect the rare mangoes from being stolen.
