Sony has officially confirmed that it managed to sell 4.5 million units of its next-generation PlayStation 5 (PS5) in the third quarter of 2020, which ended on December 31, 2020. To recall, the PS5 was launched on November 12 last year in North America, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea. Sony shared with its investors in its Q3 2020 financial report that it sold 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5 in 2020. This basically means that the company was able to sell 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5 in about a month and a half. In terms of revenue, Sony’s gaming segment generated 883.2 billion yen (approximately Rs 61,323 crore), limiting total operating income or profit in yen to 359.2 billion (roughly Rs 24,950 crore). This is more than the company’s 300.1 billion yen (approximately Rs 20,834 crore) profit made in the third quarter of 2019, guaranteeing a 20% increase in profit compared to the quarter.

In addition to the PlayStation 5 sales figures, the company also revealed that it managed to sell 1.4 million units of the previous generation of PlayStation 4 during the quarter. He also shared that there was an increase in in-game software sales, network service sales, and higher profit margins on PlayStation 4. At the same time, however, he had lost revenue due to expenses related to the PlayStation 5 launch.

Furthermore, the report shows that the company is taking losses due to the strategic pricing of the PlayStation 5, which is said to be priced lower than its cost to manufacture.
