The Kyle Shanahan-Sean McVay connection is well established by now. They worked together on the staff of Mike Shanahan, Kyle’s father, in Washington from 2010–2013. The two later got their first head-coaching job in the same division in the West in 2017.

Shanahan has a 7–4 one-on-one record against McVay, thanks in large part to a six-game regular-season winning streak over the Rams, but L.A. is the one that last season’s NFC Championship Game showdown of the teams. I had come. and went on to capture an elusive ring for both squads.

It’s the type of watershed moment that could have confidence and speed on McVay’s way on Monday night, though Shanahan will certainly have a few tricks up his sleeve as the 49ers survive a 1-3 start.
